is it possible to mod a wireless xbox 360 controller with LED’s?
im wanting to mod a wireless 360 controller into an LED lighted controller, but idk if it will work. instructions say that i need to do this with an wired controller, but i find that it would be cooler with a wireless. so my question is, is it possible to do it to a wireless? and if so, would there be any other outcomes (ex. shorter battery life, etc)?
It depends on what led mods you’re looking to perform.
If you want to change the quadrant lights (where it lights up your player number) then that’s an easy mod. You can use 0603 smd leds that are rated somewhere from 2.8-3.4 volts.
If you want to mod your controller so the buttons light up it’s going to take some custom wiring to complete. Take a look at this tutorial from llamma.com

They actually use 4 leds for the guide button and then drill and glue and smooth out the glue in the buttons so they work properly. You can just buy a custom lighted controller shell and save yourself the time and frustration. You can browse the lighted controller shells here.

They just released controllers redesigned so they lightup the custom thumbsticks as well. These controller shells are custom made and include a preassembled led board with smd leds already configured with a switch.
I’ve made somewhere from 20-25 custom xbox’s and modded over 50 controllers with leds. XCM makes top notch products and installation is as simple as soldeirng 3 wires. As far as battery life goes it does drain the battery a little faster and it fools the controller into thinking it’s dying when it’s near fully charged, so you’ll get that blinking battery light quicker with the leds on then with them turned off.
Here’s a few examples of the older xcm controller shells i’ve used. These are my personal pictures so if you have any questions let me know.
Here’s a pic of my custom elite that i just sold
It has 4 fans (a talismoon fan and a xcm v2 kit) in it with leds, two 4 inch neon tubes with a hidden switch, xcm dvd drive top, clear fan tunnel and other cooling mods. The controller is an xcm all black shell with the soft finish, black dpad and ps3 thumbsticks that i later changed out to black thumbsticks.
Here’s one of the first 360′s i ever modded. It has a halo green xcm shell with green talismoon fans and a green fan tunnel and a xcm dvd top. The controller is a xcm halo green shell.
Here’s the first 360 i sold that was modded. Has blue leds, blue talismoon fan and a xcm chrome case. The controller is a xcm chrome/blue lighted controller shell.’
The last one is just to show you what you can do with leds, this is a halo limited edition 360 with 38 orange t3 leds and 9 orange 0603 smd leds. I custom made the led arrays and modded the fan to match the orange chrome accent color on the xbox.
This next xbox is probably the most exteme one i’ve done yet. I wanted to experiment with plexi so instead of just trying it out i decided to do a custom shape with a fan. I ended up using bondo to help blend the edges and then used a bright paint to really set it off.
You can really see the plexi in this picture
