My XBox 360 Cooling Mods – 1/3

Here’s a look at my Xbox 360 setup. Like many of you, I’m tired of the RROD!!! Here’s what I’ve done in an effort to keep my 360 alive. A list of mods done so far are… -XClamp mod -Arctic Silver applied to CPU/GPU -penny trick on bottom of all RAM chips -added heatsinks to top of all RAM chips and NAND chip -added fan switch (9v/10.5v/12v) -12v fan mod (running on the switch) -added XCM fan on third heatsink -shroud split in two and sealed to heatsinks -cardboard placed over heatsinks to better direct air THROUGH heatsinks -cut out metal mesh blocking exhast fans -also cut plastic mesh blocking exhaust fans (did it after making the vid)

Mine was repaired, and it’s actually a first gen. The repair-er put on the bigger GPU heatsink as part of the deal.

  2. Wafflezorg says:

i have the first gen too , but i also have the 2nd gen heatsink, dont know whether to install that instead, but iv noticed the copper pipe runs VERY close to one of those ramchips

  3. tanbrolo says:

RAM chip overheat is far less of a concern vs. GPU overheat. I’d suggest using the 2nd gen heatsink over the 1st gen one.

  4. alex271 says:

sounds cool.. another thing was, is it better to leave the the gap opened where the dvd-rom was or close it up with something… im thinking leave it open…dono though.

  5. tanbrolo says:

Actually…neither! Fill the gap by buying a second CPU heatsink and mounting that to the GPU.
That’s what I ended up doing. The heatsink was $5 on Ebay.

  6. alex271 says:

i mean where the cd tray was, theres a gap where the dvd-rom tray used to be. over the heat sink sits a 120mm fan. i was just wondering if i should close the gap where the eject tray was.. or leave it opened for air to flow thru.

  7. tanbrolo says:

Ah, I see. You’re probably beter off keeping it open. But I chose to cover mine. I had a HDDVD so I took the DVD face off and zip tied it the the console, so it looks like the drive is there.

Then I put the HDDVD face onto my DVD and pt it in the HDDVD case.

  8. alex271 says:

cool, thanks for all the tips, great vid by the way.. it help a lot.. are u gona make another with the dvd-rom out im curious to see it.

  9. Wafflezorg says:

Please Tanbrolo im curious to see the DVD-ROM Mod you did too!

  10. tanbrolo says:

I may make another vid, but I’m REALLY busy these days.
    In a nutshell…
    -remove DVDROM
-cut and extend all power wires (soldering required)
-replace SATA cable with longer one
-cut a small hole in back of the 360 (through metal and plastic layers) for the power and SATA cables
-get a HD-DVDROM and swap in the DVDROM

  11. Wafflezorg says:

Thanks, No worries about the vid i understand! dont rush.
Sorry but im asking the most stupid question: Your fan is wired through switch so your completely bypassing stock connector right?, Have you heard of any XBL bans that can come from this becaus im going to maplin tomorrow to pick up a DPDT Switch i have already spliced 12v but its too loud so im going to take a 3.3v source aswell and wire it to 9v, just wondered if this banning discussions are all just rumors?

  12. tanbrolo says:

No one can say definitively, but *I* would say that no banning occurs from fan modifications. I’ve even looked at the I/O that the console sends to XBL and nowhere in it is anything about fan voltage. But…that doesn’t mean a future update won’t check for it. At this moment, I’d say it’s perfectly safe.

  13. tanbrolo says:

And yes…I completely bypassed my stock exhaust fan connector. My switch power both stock exhausts, as well as my XCM intake fan.

  14. Wafflezorg says:

Thankyou, just what i like to hear, i purchased a DPDT switch and wired one pole to 12v and the other to 9v. thanks for the help i will install it now.

  15. Wafflezorg says:

Fitted the switch works fine. i purchased a small project box from maplin a DPDT switch and a metre of 6 Core burglar alarm cable wired it to 12v and 9v off the dvd cable and fed the wire out the small hole above the AV port and used Blu-Tack to position the box ontop of the Hard Drive, it works lovely. Thanks for finding out that it was ok to bypass the stock connector tanbrolo.

  16. alex271 says:

the 12v mod dident work.. stillover heated the drive caugh flame.. got any tips for the next one i get.. im going to return it. i gues the mesh was a bad idea as well im going to close it up and add plastic with a hole..the fan will sit on top of the box instead of inside.. i guess the gpu was going out on me.. casue i was geting flickering images in some part of the games.. (thats all the games i played)and i had the system for like 2 weaks not even.. sux.

  17. tanbrolo says:

There’s no question that the 12v mod helps with cooling. It can not fix a console that’s already heat damaged. It sounds like your was already cooked. Definitely return it if that’s an option. If not, you could always heat gun your motherboard. I’ve fixed a number of RROD 360′s using a heat gun – it works very well.

  18. alex271 says:

i cant fix it the dvd rom, smoked up on me.. theres no ring of death though.. strange that the gpu heated up on me after doing all of those mods… do you think thant the 120mm fan is to much? maybe its making the system work more.

  19. tanbrolo says:

The ‘system does not work more’ by adding a fan – you’re just taxing the PSU by a few extra (negigible) watts.
You seem to have a seriously flawed system. Even with stock cooling which often leads to a RROD, it should not be hot enough to overheat and break your DVDROM.

  20. Wafflezorg says:

Thats true what tanbrolo said, the power from the fans is not enough to damage anything (a few watts). Seems like their may have been a short in your dvd drive or a motor burnout in the dvd rom drive.

  21. gregglvp2k8 says:

man you ain’t got bad hand writting, don’t put yourself down

  22. Wafflezorg says:

Just a quick message tanbrolo, i replaced my 12v switch for a rheostat, now using the rheostat i can vary the power of the fans so i can balance the noise and cooling power for the task i am doing on there. i usually keep it around full on games and less on dvd’s

  23. M3B31NGM3 says:

the xcm fan fits in the falcons.i didnt know that

  24. teslafredde says:

    why just don´t buy a ps3 ?

  25. tanbrolo says:

    Because…I don’t want a PS3?
